What are the covered reasons for trip cancellation?
Cancelling a trip can be a difficult and disappointing experience. However, there are situations where it may be necessary. Europ Assistance, a leading provider of travel insurance, lists the main reasons why trip cancellation is covered : a health problem or disease an accident or immobilisation of the vehicle a few days before departure or on the day of departure the death of a loved one a cause related to professional life (dismissal, new job, cancelled holidays, replacement of a colleague, etc.) an administrative reason (examination, visa refusal, theft or loss of passport, summons, etc.). If you have to cancel your trip for any of these reasons, be sure to check your travel insurance policy to see what coverage is available. Europ Assistance's cancellation policy is one of the most comprehensive in the industry. Take a look at our policies here.
Will Europ Assistance intervene if I want to cancel my trip because I and/or my travel companion have contracted Covid-19?

Yes.

Covid-19 is a disease. Based on a medical certificate (positive PCR test), the insured can invoke the covered event providing for the cancellation of the trip due to illness.

Will Europ Assistance intervene if I want to cancel my trip after risk of Covid-19 infection or if my co-traveller is infected with Covid-19 and one of us has to stay in quarantine on the day of departure?
No, the insured person is not covered if the quarantine is motivated by the mere fact of having been in contact with a positive case (as long as his PCR test is negative).

However, if, following this contact, the insured person has a medical certificate mentioning a positive PCR test, he will be able to invoke the covered event that allows him to cancel his trip due to illness.
Will Europ Assistance intervene if I want to cancel my trip due to the presence of Covid-19 at my destination?

No.

The presence of an illness at the destination is not a covered event.

Will Europ Assistance intervene in the cancellation of my trip if there is a travel or entry ban on the day of departure?

No.

A travel ban is not a covered event of travel cancellation insurance.

In any case, we recommend that policyholders contact their tour operator or travel agency to enquire about their conditions for cancelling, postponing or changing the trip. Please also refer to the website of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Does Europ Assistance intervene if the transport company refuses me or my travelling companion access to a means of transport (plane, bus, etc.) because there is a risk that we are infected with Covid-19?

In this case, the insured will have to undergo a PCR test. If the result of the test is positive, he/she will have to apply for a medical certificate that will allow him/her to activate the travel allowance.

Am I covered for medical assistance and medical expenses abroad in case of Covid-19?

Yes.

If you get ill abroad (including because of Covid-19), Europ Assistance will assist you and follow up your case based on the medical report of the attending doctor. We will reimburse medical expenses in accordance with the assistance formula you have subscribed to, after our doctor has examined your file.
However, we must always act in accordance with the decisions and rules of the local authorities (such as those relating to the access of the territory or local medical care) and health regulations imposed by the competent authorities (e.g. a period of quarantine or isolation, tests, health protocols, etc).

If you travel to a country or region subject to a travel ban (imposed by local authorities or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), you will not be eligible for medical assistance or intervention in the reimbursement of medical expenses. The same applies to non-essential travels when such trips are prohibited.

You are not ill, but you are afraid of contracting the Covid-19 virus at your destination and therefore you want to cancel your trip.

You will need to contact your tour operator, carrier and/or accommodation provider to request cancellation, modification or postponement of the trip. Indeed, in the event of a negative travel advice and in accordance with the legislation, travel agents must allow their clients to cancel their trip free of charge if it is affected by exceptional circumstances (such as an epidemic). The same applies if you have to travel to an area without an epidemiological risk, but with a stopover in an area considered a risk by the local health authorities for the Covid-19.

For high-risk zones, only zones or areas for which the FPS Foreign Affairs has issued a negative travel advice regarding the Covid-19 at the time the trip is undertaken and on condition that this advice was issued after the date of the trip reservation are considered

Is the Covid-19 pandemic a covered event in the cancellation insurance NoGo of Europ Assistance Belgium?
