What our customers say
Our most frequently asked questions
Why do I need travel insurance?
Your vacation abroad can be seriously jeopardized if you get ill or have an accident. Not only can hospitalization costs abroad quickly add up to a huge amount, but it is usually not easy to find the best help and advice. You can contact the Europ Assistance team 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Our staff will do everything possible to ensure that you can resume the normal course of your vacation as quickly as possible or assist with repatriating you and the people accompanying you to Belgium if necessary.
Is it mandatory to purchase a travel insurance?
Some countries such as Cuba and Russia require foreign travelers to be covered by a travel insurance. In any case, a travel insurance is strongly recommended when traveling abroad. Are you traveling as a family with children? Travel insurance allows you to travel safely with your whole family. Are you travelling to faraway places or are you traveling by car? In this case, a travel insurance is very practical, especially in the event of a breakdown, theft or medical problem. Your insurer is always by your side!
What are the different types of insurance?
There are many insurances on the market, some of which also cover some travel related problems. For example, health insurance often intervenes for unexpected medical expenses abroad. A credit card offers partial coverage for travel assistance when the amount of the trip has been paid by the card. On top of that, there are also coverages offered by car insurance, hospitalization insurance and travel insurance. Europ Assistance offers a wide range of travel insurance and breakdown assistance depending on your needs.
What is the difference between travel insurance and cancellation insurance?
Travel insurance and cancellation insurance are not the same.
Travel insurance offers medical and technical assistance during your stay abroad, both for the insured and the accompanying persons. This assistance also includes an early return in case of medical problems . Medical expenses abroad are covered, as well as costs generated by other potential problems during your trip.
Cancellation insurance provides financial protection in case of an unforeseen event that prevents you from going on your trip. The insurance also covers the cost of a trip modification.
What is my credit card coverage?
Many credit cards offer assistance or cancellation insurance if the trip was paid for with the card. Sometimes, however, the (financial) intervention is limited to the cardholder and does not cover people travelling with the cardholder. In the event of a technical problem with the car, repatriation of yourself and your vehicle are generally not covered.
Do I need travel insurance in addition to my health insurance?
The health insurance intervenes abroad in case of unforeseen and urgent medical problems. However, this intervention is often limited to a certain amount and repatriation is only done in emergency situations. You are not covered in case of loss of luggage, car breakdown or repatriation of your vehicle. The health insurance does not cover all countries, for example the United States.
What about medical expenses abroad? Am I covered?
If you are the victim of an accident or other medical problem abroad, your expenses are covered up to €250,000 as part of a temporary assistance. This means that all expenses incurred are reimbursed by Europ Assistance, after any intervention by your health insurance. If you travel to a country covered by your health insurance, take your health insurance card and your assistance contract with you.
Do you need to anticipate your return to Belgium following an illness or accident? This benefit is also included in your assistance contract.
When should I buy a temporary travel insurance?
If you wish to insure only one trip, for a period of up to 45 days, we advise you to subscribe a temporary travel insurance. This insurance is ideal for people who travel no more than once a year.
Tip: In many cases, it is cheaper to purchase annual travel insurance rather than purchasing temporary travel insurance each time. Annual insurance also covers a higher amount of medical expenses.
