Assistance voyage

Wat are you looking for ?

How do I choose my cover if I travel to several countries ?

If you are travelling to several countries and want to benefit from a temporary assistance, you must indicate the furthest destination when you subscribe the contract.

Your cover is defined by zone (Europe or World).

- If your chosen destination is in Europe, you will be covered throughout Europe.

Pease note : For journeys to France in combination with another country (excluding Belgium), you must select the other destination, not France. (The premium for a trip to France is lower than for the other European countries.)

- If your chosen destination is outside Europe, you will be covered thoughout the World zone.

For annual contracts, the geographical cover is defined by the contract you have subscribed (European cover of World cover).

Tip: Depending on your destination, the number of travellers and the length of your trip, it may be more economical for you to opt for annual travel assistance. We will be happy to give you personal advice on 02 541 91 91.

Am I also covered in Europe if I choose the World option ?

Yes, you are.

In the assistance formulas Light, Smart, Sport and VIP, you can choose to be covered in Europe or in the World.

If you choose the World option, the European coverage is included.

I'm already abroad. Can I still subscribe a travel insurance ?

No, unfortunately this is not possible.
A travel assistance insurance can only be subscribed when you are still in Belgium before you start your trip.

Am I automatically insured all over the world when I take out an insurance policy?

This depends on the type of contract you have subscribed :

- For temporary contracts, you have chosen the country you wish to cover. You are also covered in the countries in the same zone that you cross to reach your destination.

- For Light, Smart, VIP and Sport contracts, you are automatically covered in Europe, but you can extend your cover to the whole world by taking out the "World" option.

- In our previous range of insurance contracts (Annual, Annual Plus, Annual Comfort, Prestige), you are automatically covered worldwide.

What is a travel certificate and how can I get it ?

A travel insurance certificate is a document proving that we cover your medical expenses and/or repatriation costs.

This document is valid for the duration of your assistance contract.

You can download it easily by going to our website and clicking on your customer area.

This certificate is often compulsory when you apply for a visa in order to enter a specific country (it is required by countries such as Russia, Cuba, Algeria, Angola, etc.).

Sometimes organisations offering travel or study abroad (Erasmus) also require this type of certificate.

Is it possible to acquire a travel certificate for one single traveller ?

When you download a certificate via your Customer Centre, you will automatically receive a certificate for each beneficiary named in the policy.

Please note that the document you download consists of several pages if the policy covers several beneficiaries.

For more information, contact our Customer Service on 02 541 91 91 or send an e-mail to admin@europ-assistance.be.

Don't forget to have the addresses of all the beneficiaries.

I'm pregnant. What does that mean for my travel assistance?

Are you travelling by plane? For any air travel from the 28th week of pregnancy onwards, you must have a written approval from your doctor/gynaecologist confirmed by the airline doctor.

Any pregnancy complication is covered by us. A birth (including premature) is not a complication and therefore not covered.

A baby born during your travel abroad is covered only from his/her arrival in Belgium. You must then take the necessary steps to have the baby included as an additional insured.

Does Europ Assistance also cover outside Europe?

Of course!

All over the world you can enjoy the protection of the best assistance network in the world.

The proud name of our company doesn't change that.

I travel longer than 45 days. What travel assistance contract should I take?

Our temporary contracts cover trips of up to 45 days.

For a trip lasting more than 3 consecutive months, you can take out our Long Trip travel assistance

I travel longer than 3 months. What kind of travel assistance can I take?

For a trip longer than three consecutive months we can offer you our Long Trip travel assistance.

In which countries is it compulsory to have a travel insurance certificate?

In order to obtain a tourist visa, some countries require proof of travel insurance. This is the case for the following countries, among others:

Cuba: certificate of travel insurance recognized by the authorities (Assistur). This is the case for Europ Assistance.

Algeria: travel insurance certificate and a legalized accommodation certificate.

China

Mongolia

United States: for trips of more than 3 months.

Angola (we can provide you with a certificate in Portuguese via our customer service department)

Note: Russia and Belarus are currently excluded from our cover.

The certificates we issue are recognized by the countries listed.

Can I cover damage to a rental car?

When you return your hire car, the hire company may discover material damage to the car you have hired. In this case, the hire company's insurance will cover the damage, with the exception of the franchise (which remains to be paid by the hirer).

Our annual VIP assistance includes a Car Damage Waiver (CDW). It reimburses the franchise that you owe or would have to pay in the event of damage to the rented vehicle (for example, following an accident).

Our insurance includes reimbursement up to a maximum of €2,000.

Am I covered while skiing?

The following travel assistance policies cover all snow activities (including skiing):

Annual (as well as Comfort and Plus)

Prestige

Smart

Sport

VIP

Temporary SNOW

Affinity

Afiliatys

The cover applies on ski runs. Off-piste activities are covered if you are accompanied by a qualified ski instructor.

The formulas below do not cover snow activities:

Light

Temporary (non SNOW)

You are quarantined abroad, but you are not ill

You should contact your tour operator, travel agent or carrier for any additional costs arising from the quarantine period. The same applies if you are in an area that has been closed off by local authorities ("lock-down").

Do I need different certificates when I travel to different countries?

This depends on the destination.

For countries such as Cuba, China, Mongolia, Algeria and Angola, a separate attestation stating the country is required.

For other destinations or for other authorities, the statement "worldwide coverage" or "coverage throughout Europe" is usually sufficient.

For more information, please contact our customer service on 02 541 91 91

Note: Russia and Belarus are currently excluded from our assistance.

Is there an out of pocket (franchise) for the reimbursement of medical expenses?

In travel assistance, an "out of pocket" (franchise) is indeed applied to the reimbursement of medical expenses incurred abroad.

The amount depends on the chosen assistance formula.

Below you find an overview of our current annual products:

Is transport by helicopter to the hospital covered?

If the emergency services abroad use a helicopter to transport you to a hospital (for reasons of urgency or accessibility, for example), those costs are part of the reimbursed medical expenses.

In most contracts, costs for helicopter flights called in for search or rescue operations are reimbursed up to a maximum amount.

Please consult the Terms and Conditions of your contract for this.

Are all sports covered by the travel assistance?

In our annual assistance contracts (Light, Smart, Sport, VIP), you benefit from medical cover for all sporting activities, EXCEPT for

- incidents or accidents occurring during motorized events (races, competitions, rallies, raids) when you are taking part as a competitor or assistant to a competitor;

- activities involving firearms (except at professional shooting ranges);

- particularly dangerous sporting activities (including extreme sports) that could expose you to serious injury or death if you practice them incorrectly.

The risk involved in these dangerous sports is usually due to the speed, height or depth involved. This type of sport often requires a specific physical effort on the part of the person and/or special equipment.

Dangerous sports activities are thus those described above and practiced by people who

- are unaware that the activity they are practicing is dangerous (lack of training), and/or

- do not respect safety measures, and/or

- practice the activity recklessly and irresponsibly,

thereby exposing themselves to serious injury or death in the event of an accident.

These dangerous sporting activities are nevertheless covered if they are practiced or accompanied by a person who has undergone professional training, attesting to their knowledge and experience of these activities, as well as their commitment to complying with safety standards.

A copy of the official training certificate may be requested.

Is my trip to the USA covered?

In our annual formulas, such as Light, Smart, Sport or VIP travel assistance, you are covered in the United States if you have selected the worldwide cover.

In our temporary contracts, you must select the United States as your destination.

Because of the higher medical expenses in some countries, we recommend opting for an annual formula for the United States. Indeed, in the United States, medical costs can quickly become very high.

You show the symptoms of the Covid-19 disease or you are a carrier of the virus and you are abroad. Are you covered?

Covid-19 is covered in the same way as any other disease.

After testing positive, the person who has contracted Covid-19 is placed in quarantine with medical monitoring.

The patient must immediately contact Europ Assistance Belgium to open its medical file, via the traditional communication channels for assistance.

The medical assistance and the financial intervention of Europ Assistance Belgium will be carried out on the basis of the conditions of the contract, and in compliance with current health regulations.

The compensation is calculated after the intervention of the mutual insurance company and up to the maximum amount covered by the travel assistance contract.

What is the best travel assistance for a trip to the USA

The refund of medical costs in a temporary travel assistance is limited to € 250.000.

For a trip to the US we recommend a higher coverage through an annual travel assistance of € 1.250.000 or more.

  • Coverage for the reimbursement of medical expenses abroad is limited to €250,000

In all our travel assistance packages, you are covered during your diving. Even if something happens in the decompression chamber, we will intervene.

If you do not have the necessary experience yourself, we recommend you be accompanied by people who have received the necessary professional certification.

You have been quarantined abroad. After a few days you test positive. Is your stay in quarantine prior to the positive diagnosis considered a period of illness by the travel assistance insurance?

In the case described, the quarantine period preceding the positive medical diagnosis is considered as a period during which your medical assistance is activated, with reimbursement of your medical expenses incurred abroad and the resulting costs for the extension of your stay. You are required to submit all supporting documents. Europ Assistance Belgium will then pay for your medical expenses following the intervention of your health insurance fund, up to the maximum amount covered by your travel assistance contract.

Is my luggage automatically covered when I have a travel insurance ?

Certain luggage-related services are covered.

For example, we can send you, at our own expense, a replacement suitcase (made up by a person staying in Belgium) if your luggage is lost or stolen on the spot.

However, luggage is not automatically covered against theft or loss.

This type of insurance can be taken out as an option in all our annual contracts.

The option covers: theft, loss or delay of baggage.

This cover is not available in our temporary contracts.

I'm the only driver of the travel company. What happens if, for example, I break my arm?

As a beneficiary of the travel assistance contract, you benefit from medical intervention for your medical problem.

As for your vehicle: if your vehicle is also covered in your travel assistance, we will be happy to help you. This can be done, for example, by sending a substitute driver to bring your family home safely with your vehicle.

You remain in quarantine abroad, but you do not have enough medicines essential to your health that have been prescribed by your doctor until the end date of your stay.

Europ Assistance Belgium can organise the purchase of the medicines and their delivery on site. These medicines must be indispensable and prescribed by the patient's doctor.
